Heaven

Last night while eating dinner with my mom and grandma, Tucker randomly asked where great-papaw was. Grandpa passed away in October, after he had been living with my parents for several months. My mom explained to him that Great-Papaw is in Heaven with Jesus.

T: Oh, yeah, in Heaven. But how did he get up there?
M: The angels carried him up there.
T: But I don't see any angels. Are they too, too, too, too, too far away to see?
M: No, angels are all around us. We just can't see them, but we can feel them sometimes.
T: (after much earnest thinking) But how did Great-Papaw get up to Heaven then?
M: Well, it's an amazing mystery. If you believe in God, then one day you will get to go to Heaven, too.
T: I've already been to Heaven before. I ate some food up there and then I came back home.

Later that evening, I overheard the following conversation between Tucker and Richard:

T: How do you get to Heaven, Dada?
R: Well, you have to believe in Jesus.
T: I mean HOW to you get up there? Do the angels carry you?
R: Yes...(surprised that T knew the concept) the angels carry you up there.
T: It's a mystery, Dada.

While we were getting all tucked in for bed Tucker asked me:

T: Why did Great-Papaw go to Heaven?
M: Because he was sick, remember? He got too sick to live on Earth, so the angels took him to Heaven to live with Jesus.
T: Oh, yeah. And that's where Aunt Elaine is too? She got sick, too, so she lives in Heaven with Great-Papaw? They're friends up there?

I am amazed at what he understands. The simple innocence is refreshing and sweet. His desire to learn more about Heaven, the angels, and Jesus warms my heart beyond belief. Every day before dinner and bedtime, he reminds us that we need to say our prayers to Jesus. My Tucker makes me so proud.

That is a BIG concept for him to even try and understand. That is truly a memorable conversation. Sometimes life would be easier if we just lived through a child's perspective.
