Yesterday was Macy's 2 month appointment. Her weight was a bit of a concern at her 1 month visit, so our pediatrician recommended that we come into the office every week or so for a weight check. After continued weight concerns, I followed the advice of the lactation nurse and starting supplementing with formula. Well little Miss Macy wasn't having that at first. It took about a week before she adjusted to taking a bottle. We had to try many different bottles/nipples and formulas before we found what would work for her. She was also spitting up/throwing up way more than normal, which really concerned me. So I was a little worried about the possibility of her not gaining enough weight before going to her appointment yesterday. To my surprise, she had gained over 1lb since her last weight check, so Dr. Sue wasn't at all concerned, and was actually quite pleased with her 2 lb weight gain since her 1 month visit. Miss Macy weighs 10 lbs 10 oz and is 23 inches, putting her in the 50% for weight and 75% for height.
Macy has a birthmark on her scalp called a hemangioma, often referred to as a "strawberry." It first appeared when she was 2 weeks old as a small red mark. At her 1 month appointment Dr. Sue confirmed that it was a hemangioma (scary word, I know!) and that it's pretty common, especially in Caucasian baby girls. The good news is that hemangiomas usually go away on their own within a few years. The bad news is that they continue to grow for the first 6 months of life. It's already grown quite a bit, and after doing some online research, I've been somewhat concerned about the potential "life" of this birthmark. Everyone keeps telling me not to worry, but unfortunately that's something I inherited from my mother. :) I scheduled appointments with both a pediatric dermatologist and the birthmark expert in Dallas, Dr. Burns. After meeting with both specialists, we are continuing with the "wait and see" approach in hopes that it will regress on it's own and won't need any treatment. In the grand scheme of things, it's a trivial matter...we are so thankful for our HEALTHY, gorgeous, happy baby girl!
We took the kids to get professional photos taken yesterday after Macy's doctor appointment. The photographer did manage to get a couple of cute shots of the two of them together before Tucker decided he was DONE. He was dying to play with the Lego table in the waiting area. Macy did wonderfully, especially considering she had 3 shots at the doctor's office. She smiled and was content the entire time! Poor baby, she's been running fever since last night and has been a little fussy, but hopefully the effects of the shots won't last too much longer.
